Mckaden 2022 Update

For the Mckaden crew, 2022 was the year for making up for lost time - and what a year it was! Looking back, I’m in awe at how much we managed to fit into our schedule this summer, so I’ll summarize to keep our report at a reasonable length.

The Incomparable Jolie

Jolie (Am Ch Can RBIS MSBOS GrCh Forgetmenot Elixir D’Amour NC) earned her first points toward her Canadian Field Championship lure coursing this spring. Later in the year, Jolie was also was a superstar in the whelping box!

Our “ReuNited” Litter

On September 27th, we welcomed the arrival of Jolie’s beautiful litter of 10. We repeated this litter (sired by Vaughn) hoping for a girl and were not disappointed when Jolie delivered 9 of them!

Watch for the debut of sisters Juneau and Daphne this spring!

Vaughn’s Winning Ways

Vaughn (Can GrCh Mckaden Fly By Night AC) wrapped up 2022 needing only 1 single to complete his AKC title, which included a specialty major (Best of Winners) at the 46th Western Washington Whippet Association show. He also went Best of Breed at his first AKC lure coursing trial.

Newsflash: Vaughn finishes his AKC Championship in January 2023 at the Puyallup, Washington Show!

A Stellar Puppy Career for Lennox

Lennox (MBPISS Can Ch Mckaden Eurythmic) had a stellar season from the puppy classes! His American Kennel Club show record includes 2 specialty majors, Reserve Winners Dog to 5 (five!!) specialty majors and multiple Best Puppy in Specialty Show wins. He currently needs only 3 singles for his AKC title. Back in Canada, Lennox continued his winning ways by going Winners Dog/Best of Winners/Best Puppy in Specialty Show at the Lower Mainland Whippet Association Specialty and Winners Dog at the NWCC Canadian National Specialty in Calgary, Alberta.

Meritt’s Magical Summer

Meritt (Am MSBIS Ch Can Ch Mckaden Flying Colors NC) started the year as a dual-purpose girl with a CWA (Continental Whippet Alliance) match win and Best in Show at the Whippet Club of BC show-and-go. Then, after returning to the US with only 1 point (after 3 years of waiting), it took only took 7 days in the ring for Meritt to finish with both majors and 3 Specialty Best in Show wins (American Whippet Club Pacific North West Regional and Cascade Whippet Club) - taking her straight from the Best-By-Exhibitor class to #9 whippet. A fourth Specialty Best in Show at the Western Washington Whippet Association Specialty followed in August.

Update: Meritt finished 2022 as AKC #13 Whippet, despite being entirely breeder-owner handled and not campaigned… sometimes dreams come true!

Super Stevie!

Stevie (Am Can Ch Mckaden WholeLottaTrouble NC) did her part by certifying several new lure coursers as a steady and dependable by-dog. At nearly 7, she’s never run better - both coursing and CWA racing. We’re looking forward to showing her as a veteran next year!

Preston

Fly Free Preston

We had some sad news in August with the loss of 13-year-old Preston (Am GrCh Summit Ironwood Fawn Connery). Pressy truly lived his very best life with his favourite person Carole Anne and is very much missed. Fly free mister!

And lastly, I’m so pleased to introduce myself (Shawna Mckay) as our National Whippet Club of Canada BC Director 2023-2024. I very much look forward to taking a more active role in the club and getting to know our local membership better!
